چکیده

A new carotenoid has been isolated from the chicken retina. I t is proposed to call this galloxanthin, from GaUus, the generic name of the fowl, and the suffix -xanthin, which designates carotenoid alcohols or xanthophylls. This substance is interesting physiologically, as a new member of a series of carotenoid pigments which act as color filters for cone vision in the chicken (Wald and Zussman, 1938). I t has an interest also for carotenoid chemistry, since its absorption spectrum lies in a wavelength region wherc with one curious exceptionL-natural carotenoids have not previously been found.

Galloxanthin, a Carotenoid from the Chicken Retina

A new carotenoid has been isolated from the chicken retina for which the name galloxanthin is proposed. This substance has the properties of a hydroxy carotenoid or xanthophyll. It has not yet been crystallized. On a chromatogram of calcium carbonate it is adsorbed just below astaxanthin and above lutein. The absorption spectrum of galloxanthin lies in a region where natural carotenoids have no...

A complex carotenoid palette tunes avian colour vision.

The brilliantly coloured cone oil droplets of the avian retina function as long-pass cut-off filters that tune the spectral sensitivity of the photoreceptors and are hypothesized to enhance colour discrimination and improve colour constancy. Although it has long been known that these droplets are pigmented with carotenoids, their precise composition has remained uncertain owing to the technical...

Modified saponification and HPLC methods for analyzing carotenoids from the retina of quail: implications for its use as a nonprimate model species.

PURPOSE To investigate carotenoid content in the retina of Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica), for comparison with carotenoids in human retina, and to assess the effects of different saponification procedures on the recovery of quail retinal carotenoids. METHODS Extracted retinal carotenoids were saponified with methods adapted from recent studies, then identified and quantified with reverse-...

Immune-system activation depletes retinal carotenoids in house finches (Carpodacus mexicanus).

The costs of developing, maintaining, and activating the immune system have been cited as an important force shaping life-history evolution in animals. Immunological defenses require energy, nutrients and time that might otherwise be devoted to other life-history traits like sexual displays or reproduction. Carotenoid pigments in animals provide a unique opportunity to track the costs of immune...

Carotenoid accumulation in the tissues of zebra finches: predictors of integumentary pigmentation and implications for carotenoid allocation strategies.

Carotenoid pigments produce the bright yellow to red ornamental colors of many animals, especially birds, and must ultimately be derived from the diet. However, they are also valuable for many physiological functions (e.g., antioxidants, immunostimulants, photoprotection, visual tuning, yolk nourishment to embryos), and as a result they are present in numerous internal body tissues (e.g., liver...
